CIS, DOC, GPS Combination Surveys

Our experienced personnel provide any combination of depth of cover (DOC), close interval survey (CIS), and the survey of pipeline centerline or features using global positioning (GPS). In conjunction to our field surveys our experienced personnel also perform right of way condition and signage reports.

Data collected in our field surveys can be exported to any number of client specific GIS formats to aid in the overall integrity management of our clients’ pipeline systems.

CIS Combination Survey Overview:

  • Pre-survey data gathering. Assess pipeline route maps, identify potential locations where special circumstances may apply (residential, industrial, major road crossings, waterways, etc.)
  • Interference from foreign pipelines and structures are documented across the line.
  • Pipe to soil potentials are recorded at each location to assess system prior to starting the survey.
  • GPS position is recorded every 100 feet of survey distance as well as at every pipeline feature (valve, road crossing, stream, etc.)
  • Depth of cover is recorded every 75 feet of survey distance as well as at terrain features such as edges of bodies of water, road crossings, ditches, etc.
  • Any areas of right of way deficiencies, exposed pipe, damaged pipeline signage, or right of way encroachments are fully documented with GPS location and photographs.
  • Pipe to soil potentials are recorded at a client defined interval during the survey. Pipe to soil potential will be collected at each test station and will include near ground, far ground, and IR between test points. It will also be collected at each rectifier and bond for foreign structures and pipelines.
  • Final reporting will include voltage potential graphs, depth of cover, span and exposure documentation, all photographs, and a complete listing of all readings recorded. Pipeline survey distance will be referenced to pipeline station number and will also carry GPS coordinates.
